Ivy ......

Started by: tonker (28055)

...... No. Not Ivy Tyldesley off Coronation Street. The stuff what grows up your wall, through your soffits, then into your loft!
I remembered, my Dad's words when I bought this house, "you want t'get shut of this stuff. It'll ruin your woodwork". But I didn't and, today, I regretted not doing!
I've took it all off. In the roof it was. All inside the soffits and it's ruined the woodwork.
And, when I'd finished, I was itching off! Ayyyyy, well.

Has anybody else had problems with the stuff?

I don't think so, but I was itchy because the ivy was full of sesps, crawling on me and biting the bald patch on top of me yed!

When I lived in the terrace house I had ivy growing up the front of the house and at one time it was over 2ft deep. I kept it in check by cutting it away from the wooden windows and door frame. At the top again kept it under the bricks which held the gutter. When I decided to get rid of it I just cut it at the base and it just over a few days rolled off the wall and I cut it into manageable cubes and got rid of it.There was a few tendrils left on the wall but a drill with a wire brush head soon cleared them away.

It’s a curse of nature, grows everywhere, ruins the looks of places.I still have brickwork that was damaged by a neighbour who let it grow rampant. It does a lot of damage if not controlled.

Retep1949 The brickwork /mortar on the house was sound . If there is a crack or loose mortar then the ivy would get behind it and could cause damage

The brickwork was sound it left trail where it had clunk to the bricks,an eyesore and difficult to remove the trails from high up.
